Are you one of those people who prides themselves on being able to “multi-task like a pro”?  Well unless you are a part of the small 2.5% of the population who can do it effectively, you are probably not a pro!

Somewhere along the line in our careers we started listing multi-tasking as a strength when truthfully in business, it’s a weakness in most situations!  Why? Multi-tasking divides our attention making it harder for us to be fully present for any one thing!

Think about this morning, were you reading the news and drinking coffee at the same time?  Tell me could you fully describe to me the nutty smell of the brew, the taste of the harvested beans, and feel the warmth as it seeped into your body?  Most people would tell me all they got from their morning cup of coffee was the caffeine jolt after consumption!  Why?  Because you were not fully committed to being present and enjoying your cup of Joe!

Why do we do it? Because there is a pressure to perform more tasks in less time!  But guess what, you are actually doing less because you are forcing your brain to switch between tasks, and it takes your brain time to make that switch which equates to lost time!

So today I am sharing with you some of my proven techniques that allow you to stop multi-tasking and find more time in your day!

 If you want more time in your day, you must press pause on the multi-tasking and focus on one task at a time!  I bet this is something that you are not used to doing, so that is why I am helping you today with some techniques that truly do work.

Why implement these techniques?  Simple!  When you focus on one task and complete it, you will have more time to spend on doing other things!  Like quality time with your family and friends doing FUN stuff!

Technique #1 –

On a Sunday, spend 15 minutes planning your week!  This allows you to review everything on your to-do list and assign them a value – MUST, MAYBE, MOVE.  To get the exact directions on how to do this, you can grab The Overachievers Guide to Attaining Work-Life Balance.

Technique #2 –

Time Block your schedule!  There are 7 main areas of our lives according to the Oola Guys –Fitness, Finance, Family, Faith, Friends, Fun, and Field (your career)!  Each week you want to work to find balance in each of those categories by blocking out time for each one.  Maybe that means spending 2 hours on a Sunday with your family having fun or another option could be grabbing your girlfriends and going for a walk around a local park. Those 2 examples may seem like multi-tasking, but they will allow you get both done and done effectively.  Do not try to work on your monthly budget at the gym though, that’s too much! There are many ways to find more time, you just must be aware of each area and block the time in your schedule! 

Technique #3 –

Batching similar tasks! Above I mentioned that you lose time when you must switch back and forth between tasks, so how do we avoid that?  Simple!  Batch out the tasks you have on your to-do lists in similar categories!  For instance, when I sit down to produce this weekly video, my goal is to complete 5 weeks’ worth of topics at once.  First, I write all 5 scripts, then I record all 5 videos, and finally I schedule all 5 weeks of emails.  This allows me to do the same task 5 times quickly!

Technique #4 –

Share your schedule with everyone who is important to you!  This could be your family, friends, team members etc.  Why?  Explain to them, this is the schedule you have for this week, I have included you on these days and times.  However, when I am not with you, I will be working on these other tasks, and I would appreciate you giving me this time to focus. By you doing this, I can be present when we are together! This communication technique allows you to be open and honest about what you have on your plate, shows the main people in your life they are included, and explains to them why you will have your “door shut” for the other times in your week.  What I also like is this sets an example for others which hopefully they will begin to mimic and together we can all ditch the “multitasking as a pro” badge once and for all!

These 4 techniques have allowed me to find the time needed in my week to build the business I needed so I could increase my income to the level where I could gain the Freedom, I was desperate for in my life!  I have been using them for 10+ years and if you follow me on social media, you know my main life mission is to live this one life I was given to its fullest!

In summary, the gift of being present for the most important people in your life is truly the best present you can give someone!  By implementing these 4 techniques you too can start your journey to living the life of your dreams because remember we only get one!
